Cannabis Can Bolster Your Work-Life Balance — True or False?
Work-life balance technically refers to the lack of opposition between work and other life roles. It is the state of equilibrium in which demands of personal life, professional life and family life are equal. But, over the years, the term has informally evolved to measure how you juggle workplace stress with the daily pressures of family, friends and self.
Truth be told, we’re not here to argue how you define it. We’re actually here to discuss whether cannabis can improve it. And while it’s probably up for you to decide, for our part, we’ll say: yes! Cannabis can bolster your work-life balance!
Here’s why.
1. Being able to enjoy the moment is considered critical to a better work-life balance, and cannabis can help you master that mindset.
It isn’t a scientific fact or anything, but cannabis use is believed to make you more mindful. And mindfulness, of course, is all about maintaining moment-to-moment awareness of whatever it is you’re doing. So, there’s that. But let’s say you don’t buy into the mindfulness stuff. Fine. Certain sativa, indica and hybrid strains can give you the laser-like focus required to compensate. Take Cinex. It’s what you reach for when coffee won’t do the job. Or, take Sour Diesel. It’s renowned for its ability to shine an engaging light on activities and tasks. Or, take Harle-Tsu, a cross between Harlequin and Sour Tsunami. It’ll ease you into clear-headed calmness with few intoxicating effects (if any), meaning you’ll keep your cognitive faculties intact. The list goes on.
2. Cannabis can amplify both exercise and meditation, both of which are similarly deemed keys to improving work-life balance.
Some studies show that mixing weed and workouts can inspire an increased commitment to exercise. According to a recent one published in Frontiers in Public Health, which surveyed about 600 cannabis users aged 21 and up, 52 per cent of those who worked cannabis into their exercise regimens said it made them more motivated to work out. Likewise, 70 per cent said it boosted how much they enjoyed the activity, while 78 per cent claimed it helped their recovery. Cannabis has a knack for sharpening the mind when combined with meditation techniques, too. You can pair deep breathing and cannabis by, say, inhaling an uplifting strain to capitalize on your meditative feelings of euphoria. You can also pair body mindfulness and cannabis with, say, a dose of indica, which promises to open up a deep sense of alleviation.
3. Cannabis can combat the consequences of work-life imbalance, such as stress, anxiety and depression.
Don’t just take our word for it. In a first-of-a-kind study, Washington State University scientists themselves examined how peoples' self-reported levels of stress, anxiety and depression were affected by smoking different strains and quantities of cannabis at home. Their report was published last year in the Journal of Affective Disorders, and it suggested that smoking cannabis could significantly reduce short-term levels of depression, anxiety and stress. Specifically, the WSU research team found that one puff of cannabis high in CBD and low in THC was optimal for reducing symptoms of depression, two puffs of any type of cannabis was sufficient to reduce symptoms of anxiety, while 10 or more puffs of cannabis high in CBD and high in THC produced the largest reductions in stress.
