DIY Holiday Gifts Made with Love (and Weed)

Let’s face it - the holidays might look a little different this year for a lot of people.

Shopping for presents is a little trickier and supporting local shops has never been more important. Homemade gifts are a labour of love and spread the holiday cheer (without spreading covid concerns).

This is the year of the DIY gift thanks to lots of time at home and embracing our creative sides. The adults in your life (that enjoy cannabis of course) deserve a little extra special gift this year.

Cannabis makes an easy and inventive gift, using cannabis oil and flower to make salves, crafts, or an infused food like cookies. Find your inner Martha Stewart, who is a huge fan of CBD by the way, with these 3 homemade holiday gift ideas.

Kush Kringle Cookies

Edibles are not as complicated as some many think - literally any recipe can be converted into a cannabis recipe. Much like those gourmet cooking oils that soak herbs and garlic to infuse with flavour - you can soak cannabis in oils and butters to infuse them with cannabinoids.

  1. Pick your favourite cookie recipe that has butter or oil in it

  2. Instead of using regular butter, switch it out with cannabutter

  3. Bake according to recipe instructions

Looking for a vegan alternative? Infused coconut oil is a popular substitution for butter.

If you are new to cannabis, or using a particularly strong oil, you can lower the potency of your final cookie product if need be. To make a lower potency cookie, simply use a ratio of regular butter to infused butter totalling the amount the recipe calls for.

Crafting with Cannabis

There are endless ways to get your craft on with cannabis. Instagram is flooded with elaborate embroidery, custom jewelry, pressed leaf art, and pretty much anything you can think of. Do you have a talent for cross-stitch? How about an affinity for art?

Creative types have been painting, stitching, casting, and sculpting weed leaves for wall art, throw pillows, tapestries, and more. Not in your wheelhouse? Support a local artist and buy one - no one said you had to make it yourself! Here are some fun ones on Etsy we love: Hemp Rings for you and someone special; Plants are Friends and Green Goddess embroidery designs that will spice up your home decor.

DIY Topical Salve

Everyone and their mother are talking about homemade cannabis salves. Way more research needs to be done but there is some promising data showing using cannabis topically might be therapeutic.

Regardless of if you are using it for medical reasons, or just for super supple skin, DIY cannabis topicals are a fairly simple and pain free process.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups cannabis-infused coconut oil

  • ⅓ cup sweet almond oil

  • ⅓ cup cacao butter

  • 1 tbs shea butter

  • 3-6 drops of essential oils

Instructions:

  1. Use a double boiler to melt ingredients together

  2. Make sure to keep the oil under 200 degrees F

  3. Cool in fridge

  4. (Optional) - use electric whisk to beat mixture into a whipped texture instead of a harder salve texture

  5. Seal in tin or tinted glass

You can really customize salve formulations for personal preferences. Experiment with different essential oil combinations to create unique aromas. Salves can be made with your own infused oils or from ready made oils. Using already made oils allows for more precise dosing - aka how much potency is in the final product.
